winnow
pour—over
A coffee-making system built around the ritual of coffee-making while optimizing everything from bloom, to storage, to pour.
The Winnow Coffee System was built around the needs of coffee–nerds and baristas. The product line is designed to work seamlessly together, but each piece is also made to work with pre–existing standards. The fluted surfaces intuitively signal touch points, the transparent components indicate the stage of the coffee brewing, and the articulating filter/funnel adjusts to the desired amount of brew. This product line was built around the constraints of the cafe–environment and created in the collective ritual that is coffee–making.

“My favorite coffee-making tools behind the bar are analogue and simple.”
The impetus of this project came in the form of a love for coffee and local cafe culture in Providence, Rhode Island. Further, a diverse range of feedback and contacts helped conceptualize, refine, rebuild, and test; this process helped focus in on a fundamental to pour-over system.
Ideation
Iteration
This system became more refined, intuitive, and simplified by continually testing, iterating, and focus–grouping with local cafe baristas and enthusiasts. The result is a simple and intuitive pour–over for making cafe–grade coffee at home and turning coffeemaking into a highlight and a ritual.
FABRICATION
TESTING
Many forms of making and testing, including clay modeling, laser–cutting, metal milling, foam carving, wood turning, and 3D printing, were used over the course of the exploration phase to bring to users for feedback and implementation.
Branding Packaging and Imaging
Surfacing, finish, and ergonomic details
The feature–set emphasizes touchpoints and ergonomics; the fluted textures indicate touch points and enhance grip, and the nesting nature of the product line puts the coffee–making process on display {even when it’s set out to dry}. To ensure safety, the tapered top means it's harder to knock over a fresh pot, and on each product, there is a place to touch and grip without burning your hand.
